2001 FISHING REPORT

2001 Totals

POLES LOST: 0 FISH KEPT: 85 2001 was the first year in which no poles were lost! Though, unfortunatly, last year was also the least fished year in quite some time. 2002 will have more days logged and hopefully more fish.

I have finally managed to fish with both Kliff and Aaron this weekend. Something that hasn't been done since the beginning of the season. At that time I found that in the last month Kliff as caught about 15 more keepable cats, and Aaron so far this season has about 22 to his credit, including 2 30lbs and many from 10-15. We sent a friend off to Japan for military duty this week and took him down to the river. He nailed a 7 lbs and 16 lbs blue cat. Kliff hit a 7 pound channel, and Aaron nailed 6 small (2-4 lbs) flatheads, and at least that many medium sized carps.
So far the tally runs:
Aaron with 22
Kliff with 15
Keith (myself) with 5
Eric with 1
Unfortunatly we only keep track of cats over 5 lbs and no junk fish (carp, buffalo, small drum, gar, etc...), otherwise the rankings would be much different.

Unfortunatly, the mighty Miss has been too high to fish here. Without shelf rock exposed there is no place to stand. We plan on going out Father's Day Week-end due to the fall of the river. Hopefully the fishing's good. It's been a month since the big day of the year, but with the dog days of summer comming up and the high river levels behind us, we should be instore for some awesome catches.

First day in a while we've been out. River was high about 27.80. Great day. We pulled in 2 channel cats about 6-7 lbs., one about 4 lbs. that we threw back due to being too small, 1 5-1/2 lbs. flat head, a small drum, and a 15 lbs. channel cat, the largest so far. All on one pole. My pole almost got sucked in but we caught it in time. This has the makings of being a very good season.

Unfortunatly, trips have been put on hold temporarliy due to the high water levels of the Mississippi. As of today the river is only about 4 feet below flood stage and the water has covered our fishing spots. The river can still be fished from boat or shore if you can find a place to stand. Hopefully the river level drops within the next week.

This was the first trip of the season. Not too bad. The river rose and fell about 6 feet during the week, and was about 19.40 ft. that Saturday. The wind was strong, causing medium sized whitecaps to form. The water was pretty murky as well. We only caught a 3-5 lbs. drum and a 3 pound channel cat. With the rain in the west and the spring melting in the north it may be a couple weeks till everything levels out.
